La vendemmia era praticata già al tempo dei romani che addirittura avevano una festività, i Vinalia Rustica che si celebravano il 19 agosto, in cui si offriva un agnello a Giove per rendere propizia la vendemmia che di lì a poco si sarebbe effettuata. Grape harvesting was already practiced at the time of Romans who even had a festivity, the Vinalia Rustica which was celebrated on August 19, in which they offered a lamb to Jupiter in order to make propitious the harvesting which was going to take place soon after.

La vendemmia era anche un momento di coinvolgimento della comunità in quanto tutti, inclusi vicini e amici, aiutavano la famiglia nella raccolta che veniva fatta rigorosamente a mano. The grape harvest was also a moment of gathering of the community as the whole family, together with neighbours and friends helped in the collection strictly by hand.

Sebbene oggigiorno esista la raccolta meccanizzata dell’uva, tramite dei macchinari che scuotono le piante e staccano i grappoli, la raccolta a mano è tuttora impiegata. Ma perché? Innanzitutto, permette la selezione accurata di ogni singolo grappolo, in secondo luogo i vigneti piccoli avrebbero una spesa eccessivamente alta se usassero la vendemmia meccanizzata, ed infine non tutti i vigneti sono in pianura, alcuni si trovano in terreni pendenti che quindi rendono impossibile il passaggio di grandi macchinari. Although nowadays there is the mechanized harvesting of grapes, by means of machines that shake the plants and take off the bunches, hand harvesting is still used. But why? First of all, it allows the accurate selection of every single bunch, secondly small vineyards would have an excessively high expense in case they used mechanized harvesting, and lastly not all vineyards are in plain areas, some of them are in sloping lands which therefore make the passage of big machinery impossible. 

In Italia la vendemmia avviene solitamente a settembre, ma ciascun proprietario dovrà tenere conto di alcuni fattori per la raccolta, come il clima, l’esposizione al sole, il tipo di uva e il tipo di vino che vuole ottenere.

Dopo essere stata raccolta può iniziare il processo di vinificazione, cioè la trasformazione degli zuccheri in alcol tramite la fermentazione.

A Firenze ogni anno si festeggia la vinificazione e l’arrivo del nuovo vino in città dalle zone circostanti con la celebrazione del Carro Matto , una tradizione che risale al XV secolo, in cui un carro con moltissimi fiaschi di vino viene trainato da buoi per essere benedetto.

La vendemmia, come il vino, sono una parte importantissima della tradizione popolare italiana ed hanno contribuito alla ricchezza e alla cultura degli italiani di oggi, sia sociale che familiare.

In Italy harvesting usually takes place in September, however, each owner will have to consider some factors when harvesting, such as climate, exposure to the sun, type of grape, and the kind of wine he or she wants to make.

After having been harvested, the process of vinification can begin, that is the transformation of sugars into alcohol by means of fermentation.

In Florence every year is celebrated the vinification and the arrival of the new wine in the city from the surrounding areas with the celebration of Carro Matto , a tradition dating back to the fifteenth century, in which a cart with many flasks of wine is pulled by oxen in order to be blessed.

Grape harvest, just like wine, is a very important part of the popular Italian tradition and has contributed to the richness and culture of Italians today, both social and familiar.
